Black & White

Although chemigrams are made on black and white photographic paper, producing and preserving monochromatic tones is relatively challenging. Developer induces blacks and greys while treatment with fixer produces white and yellows. However, artificial and (especially) sunlight causes the photographic paper to turn various shades of pink, purple, brown and yellow. In addition, the mixing of developer and fixer results in intense brown and gold colours. Therefore, the work in this collection - for the most part - was made under dim light without substantial mixing of chemicals. Various resists were used to make these chemigrams and included adhesive tape, oil paint, varnish, wax and glue.
